South Creake & Stanhoe - Jack’s Lane Wind Farm

The joint public inquiry, with the Chiplow wind farm, ended on 22 February 2012

The Inspector’s decision is expected in April 2012

The proposed Jack’s Lane Wind Farm is situated in the centre of the villages of South Creake, North Creake, Stanhoe and Syderstone in the County of Norfolk, UK (OS Grid Ref: TF 827 355).

The current proposal announced in March 2010 is for six 2.3MW turbines on Barwick Hall Farm.  The original proposal was for thirty such turbines on both Barwick Hall Farm and Bluestone Farm.  However the owner of Bluestone Farm (Miss Jean Papworth of Bishops Stortford) has not yet given her permission for the turbines on her land and so the power company, Renewable Energy Systems (RES), is going ahead initially with just the six turbines on Barwick Hall Farm, where the farmer (Mr Melton Harrold) has given his permission.  RES intend to submit their planning application for the six turbine wind farm in August 2010.

With three wind farms proposed in the neighbouring villages of South Creake (Jack’s Lane), Syderstone (Chiplow Wind Farm) and Docking (Fring Wind Farm) there is something of a planning race going.  Under English planning law the first planning application received would not have to consider the cumulative impact of the other two.  In Scotland the cumulative impact of all three would have to be considered together.  This may explain why RES is not prepared to wait for the owner of Bluestone Farm to make up her mind.  RES can then come back later with plans to extend their wind farm back to its original size.

These turbines will be huge, measuring to a height 127 metres (412 feet) at the blade tip, with a rotor diameter of 93 metres (303 feet).  If you click on this picture you will see a recent photograph of a CAPE committee member standing in front of a slightly smaller turbine at North Pickenham wind farm.  She is the dark spec at the foot of the turbine tower.  You may need to enlarge that part of the photograph to see her.  This height is similar to some of the office blocks at Canary Wharf.  The circumference of the rotor blades, even on the smaller 100 metre (325 feet) turbines proposed for the Syderstone (Chiplow) site, is so large that you could contain a jumbo jet within it, see diagram.  The turbines proposed for Jack’s Lane are about 30% larger than this.

Taken together these three wind farms would be one of the largest on-shore wind turbine clusters in England.  They are all situated in the middle of the feeding grounds for the hundred thousand pink foot geese which over winter along the Norfolk coast.  As the low flying geese approach their inland feeding grounds these wind farms will present a hazard six miles wide and over a mile deep.
